Sail Bookends

Commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi to create a limited edition, this handmade product is an artistic representation of the United Arab Emirates’ culture & heritage.

These bookends were inspired by the Emirati traditional dhow sailing races, where the wooden boats skim the sea’s surface with big white billowed lateen sails, forming a timeless elegant image.

The sails’ Arabic calligraphy depict a quote from the late UAE President and Father of the Nation Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who said:

“Knowledge of heritage illuminates both ideas and a way of life”.
